TROY -- The owner of a Vermont tree service company faces a grand larceny charge for charging a Brunswick resident $58,000 for work that was only worth about $8,000, according to the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office.

David K. Barber of Bennington is charged with third-degree grand larceny after a two-month investigation, investigators said.

They said the probe began after they learned Barber may have overcharged the unidentified resident, who deputies described as elderly, for his services. The sheriff's office said Barber charged his victim $58,000 for a job that should have only cost $8,000.

Barber was arraigned by Town Justice Lawrence Kronau and sent to the county jail where he is being held on $15,000 bail.

David Barber was a friend of ours FOR ALMOST 30 YEARS. Hurricane Irene caused damage to our home through wind driven rain and needed some demolition and repair to the inside. He came to our house and nailed plastic and tarps all over the roofs on our house stating that the roofs all needed to be redecked and reshingled. When we had a roofer with 30 years experience look for damage to the rooftops, he told us the damage on the roof was caused by David Barber walking on the dormer roofs and nailing through everything else. Before we had even signed a contract,he came back with 4 guys to start demo. They showed up at 9:30am started working at 9:45 ending at 3pm. they spent half the day sitting around my picnic table in the back yard smoking and drinking. they worked for three hours, ONLY.(I was careful to record all the time they were outside) David left at noon and was not heard from again until I had left him a total of 15 voice mails. When he did finally return my call he was screaming and yelling profanities at me. The next day he called my husband and threatened him with physical violence. One week later we got a certified letter from him demanding $2871.00 for 5 days work, my neighbor witnessed the fact that they had only been there one day "working". We have made more than a dozen attempts to contact him by phone to no avail. If this is how he treats his "friends" I sure wouldn't want to be just another customer.. DO NOT TRUST THIS PERSON

I spoke with the investigator yesterday Nov.14 2011 he told me that there is not enough evidence to charge David Barber with grand larceny and now this old lady he ripped off is having to hire a lawyer at her expense to sue him. He further went on to tell me that they have received many calls from people in the same situation with Mr Barber..he needs to go to jail!
